Kaley Wheless and Bob Byington on the set of "Frances Ferguson" (2019)

Neko me je to pitao pre deset godina i odgovorio sam „Bred Pit”. Dakle, reći ću ponovo „Bred Pit”.

An exclusive festival interview with this year's guest, Bob Byington

Locarno is mostly known as a film festival that is not so fond of comedy. In spite of that, not only your film “Somebody up there Likes Me” has been selected, but you have won the Special Jury Award. How did you do that?

Yes, they don't seem to show a lot of comedy. I think the success of that film had a lot to do with the head of the festival at that time, Olivier Pere --he seemed to get what we were doing.

In your films family is kind of quirky – babies that don’t age, wives that prefer prison to husbands, hard-shell mothers. Beyond the imaginative setting of your stories, there is a hint that American family - or perhaps in general family- is dysfunctional. Could you elaborate?

I agree, it's an excellent observation, I do see family as dysfunctional. The film I made before Frances Ferguson, Infinity Baby, someone asked me what it was about and I said, "Have dinner with your family".

In both RSO and your latest film “Frances Ferguson” your main characters are sex offenders. Both told from the felons’ point of view, they present the heroes’ difficulty to reintegrate into society. Why is this topic so important to you?

I look at some of the difficulties that Fran has and compare them to my difficulties. I want to put her in a rehabilitation because I find rehabilitation environments humorous. You're a sex offender, go pick up trash.

Texas seems to be an important film production hub. A lot of talented independent filmmakers live and work there. Is there a particular energy or any other reason for this?

I think it's Richard Linklater and the film society he started in the early 90s. And that in turn attracted filmmakers to Austin, for example Andrew Bujalski.

Nick Offerman acts in almost every single film of yours. How much of an inspiration is he to you?

Big inspiration, he's a great guy and I'm lucky to know him.

You certainly have a gift working with actors. If you would have the chance to work with a worldwide famous actor, who would that be?

I got asked that ten years ago and I said Brad Pitt, so I'm going to say Brad Pitt again.
